Provincial Grand Almoner attends MBF Plaque unveiling at Children's Centre in Henley
12 Jun 2017
On 6th June, our Provincial Grand Almoner, W.Bro. Keith Rogers PGStdB was privileged to attend the unveiling of a plaque at the Chiltern Centre in Henley-on-Thames, a centre for disabled children and young adults. Last year the Mark Benevolent Fund donated £14,600 to the Centre to enable them to complete a sensory room for the children, who are severely impaired, either physically and/or mentally. He joined with V.W.Bro. John Bell, a Trustee of the Mark Benevolent Fund, his wife Mary, and Trustees of the Centre, to witness unveiling of the plaque commemorating the support and funding of the Mark Benevolent Fund and The Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons.
After the unveiling they were given a demonstration of the equipment in the Sensory Room and then a tour of the other facilities available by the Centre Manager, Keith Manning and Fund Raiser, Jane Ainslie. During the tour W.Bro. Keith became aware and very humbled by the dedication of the staff towards the charges in their care and of their efforts to improve the lives of these young people who need constant attention and help in carrying out all everyday living.
The Henley Standard and Henley Herald press were present so hopefully those living in the local area will be able to see details in either of these two newspapers.
W.Bro. Keith is therefore well placed to assure all the Brethren of the Oxfordshire Mark Province that the Mark Benevolent Fund has spent this money wisely and for the benefit of those less able than ourselves, and he encourages you to support "Our" fund whenever you are able.

Mark Provincial Annual Meeting
21 May 2017
On 11th May a very successful and happy Annual Meeting took place at Heythrop Park attended by 130 members, visiting Provincial Grand Masters and distinguished visitors.
The Provincial Grand Master welcomed six Brethren who had been advanced during the year and presented them with commemorative lapel badges and he also presented a Mark Benevolent Fund gold jewel and collarette to W.Bro. Michael Killeen.
The meeting was called off and those who had taken part in the MBF Charity Walk, Mrs Wendy Wright, Miss Victoria Alexander, the Deputy Provincial Grand Master, W.Bro. Ian Wright, the Provincial Grand Senior Warden, W.Bro. Tony Nimmo and the Provincial Grand Junior Warden, W.Bro. John Reeve were presented to the Provincial Grand Master who presented them with commemorative Certificates to mark the walk. The Deputy Provincial Grand Master reciprocated by presenting the Provincial Grand Master with his own Certificate.
After the investiture of Officers, a special highlight of the meeting was the Presentation of a Certificate of Appreciation to V.W.Bro. John Holtom PGMO who was stepping down after 16 years as Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies. The presentation took place in the presence of the four past and present Provincial Grand Master under whom V.W.Bro. John had served.
V.W.Bro. John was also presented with a travel voucher as a parting gift from the Lodges of the Province which was supplemented at the Festive Board by the presentation of a bottle of 12 year Malt Whisky.
As the meeting was taking place, a number of wives of members and visitors were entertained to a talk by Dr Robert Treharne-Jones, The Press Officer of Leander Rowing Club and Regatta commentator which was followed by a convivial dinner.

A Pillar of the Province
07 Feb 2017
A Pillar of the Province
The Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies, V W Bro John Hector Holtom PGMO has informed me that, with some sadness, he wishes to stand down from his Office after the Provincial Annual Meeting on 11th May and has asked that he should not be considered for re-appointment.
With great reluctance I have agreed to his request.
V W Bro John has been a member of this Province since it was consecrated in 1994 and has served the Province as an active officer since 1996 when he was appointed PrGADC. His talents were already recognised and he rapidly rose through the Offices of the Province; PrGDDC 1998, PrGSW 1999, and was first appointed PrGDC in 2002.
During his period in Office he has faithfully and diligently served four Provincial Grand Masters; RW Bro Geoffrey Redman- Brown 1996 -2004, RW Bro Richard Slade 2004-2012, RW Bro James Hilditch 2012-2014 and myself since 2014. I was delighted to recognise this history of service by awarding VW Bro John with the Provincial Grand Master's Certificate of Merit on 2nd December 2014.
Grand Lodge have similarly appreciated his talents and he was first appointed to Past Grand Standard Bearer in 2001 and to active office in 2006 as Assistant Grand Director of Ceremonies. He received further promotions in Grand Lodge in 2011, to Past Grand Senior Deacon, and in 2016 was promoted to Past Grand Master Overseer.
Although he is too modest to acknowledge the fact, Oxfordshire is envied by many Provinces for its Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies and for the high quality of the meetings which he organises and at which he officiates with an air of supreme calm and authority
Throughout his period of office, V W Bro John has been a pillar of strength, his knowledge of the history of the Province and of Masonic ritual being unsurpassed within this Province.
He will be greatly missed by the Province and I know that I will miss the personal support which he has given to me and for his wise counsel.
V W Bro John has assured me that he will always be available to offer assistance to me and to the Province and I sincerely hope that he will remain a familiar face around the Province and further afield for many years to come.

Royal Ark Mariner Travelling Ark Presentation

Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master
Having witnessed the success of the Travelling Keystone in the Mark Degree, it was thought that the Honourable Fraternity of Royal Ark Mariners in Oxfordshire should have a similar symbol of friendship.
I now have great pleasure in presenting to you, RW PGM, a replica of Noah's Ark for that purpose.
It has been carved and fitted out by a renowned River Thames boat builder who also happens to by one of Her Majesty's Royal Swan Uppers.
May it sail fraternally and serenely on its journey from one Royal Ark Mariner Lodge in Oxfordshire to another.

The Provincial Grand Master and his Team are grateful to the Lodge for the friendship and hospitality extended to them by the Brethren of Wychwood Lodge

Visit to Brussels
03 Feb 2016
Its not all sunshine and roses being a Provincial Officer!
One of the consequences of the horrific terrorist attacks in Paris in November and the lock down in Brussels which followed was that the Annual Meeting of the District Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons of Belgium had to be postponed from 5th December 2015 to 30th January 2016.
The Provincial Grand Master, Deputy Provincial Grand Master and Provincial Grand Secretary had arranged to attend the meeting in December (we hasten to add, at their own expense) together with their wives/ partners.
The postponement caused great difficulties for our Brethren in Brussels and many visitors were forced to cancel their attendance but Oxfordshire Mark Master Masons are made of sterner stuff.
We were delighted to attend the re-arranged meeting, to show solidarity with the District Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons of Belgium and to share with them an excellent weekend of Masonic ceremony and social enjoyment but ... we hadn't reckoned on the torrential rain.
The Provincial Grand Secretary challenges anyone to call him a drip!
A Successful Ladies' Lunch
30 Nov 2015
On Tuesday 13th October 2015 the wife of our Provincial Grand Master, Mrs Rosemary Alexander, held a ladies lunch at her home The Folly, Fifield at the cost of £10 per head. It was attended by the wife of the Deputy PGM and 16 partners of Officers of the Province and of serving Masters. After pre-lunch drinks they sat down to insalata tricolore followed by salmon en croute ending with chocolate brownies, raspberries and ice cream.
During coffee the guest speaker, Mrs Catherine Hitchins, gave a most entertaining talk on seeing history through the landscape. This was so well received by all present that Catherine has been invited to speak again before the dinner the Ladies of the Province will be having at Heythrop Park on the evening of the Provincial Annual Assembly, of which notice will be circulated in due course.
A very successful raffle was held for the Fifield Stitchers Project to create a needlework hanging for St John the Baptist, Fifield's Parish Church, which had been earlier explained by Catherine. This raised a very welcome £100 towards the very large sum which needs to be raised.
The lunch proved very popular and enabled the ladies to get together and discuss what they might like to do together in the future and hopefully to increase the friendships they are forming.
Mrs Alexander kindly gave the £50 profit on the lunch to the Province.

Popular Local Mason Gets Unusual Promotion
22 Jan 2015
When Geoff Tozer, of Western Road, Henley, a Past Master and Secretary of Thames Lodge of Mark Master Masons arrived at the meeting of the Lodge at the Henley Masonic Centre in Reading Road on Friday 16th January, he was not greatly surprised to see the Provincial Grand Master of Mark Master Masons of Oxfordshire already there.
It was the Lodge's traditional Burn's Night Meeting an important social event in the Province's calendar.
Geoff was however taken aback and somewhat apprehensive when towards the end of the evening after Jose Cadenas had been advanced into the Lodge as a new member, he, Geoff, was summoned before the Provincial Grand Master, Right Worshipful Brother His Honour Ian Alexander QC. His concern was short lived however because the Provincial Grand Master proceeded to carry out the unusual procedure of a "Field Promotion", immediately promoting Geoff to Past Provincial Grand Senior Warden in recognition of his considerable service to the Province over many years, so saving Geoff a difficult journey to the Province's Annual Meeting at Heythrop Park in May.
The Provincial Grand Master reminded the Brethren that Geoff, who had lived and worked in Henley all his life, had for many years not only been a tremendous hard worker for Mark Masonry but had been a devoted supporter of the Henley Regattas and the Henley Rugby Club, the latter having contributed to relative immobility in later years. The Provincial Grand Master sympathised with Geoff about the effects of old sporting injuries many of which were also catching up with him, he having had too many falls from horses.
The appointment was received with great acclaim by the fifty assembled Brethren of the Lodge and Province.
Also present were the Deputy Provincial Grand Master, Very Worshipful Brother Stephen Willoughby, the Past Provincial Grand Master Right Worshipful Brother Richard Slade and the Deputy Provincial Grand Master Designate Worshipful Brother Ian Wright
The very successful meeting was followed by the Lodge's traditional Burns Night Supper when the haggis was "addressed" with great verve and vigour by Worshipful Brother Allan Dishington such that the vile beastie was well and truly slain and later devoured with relish (and neeps and tatties) by the members of the Lodge and their guests.

Presentation of Certificate of Merit
RW Bro Grand Director of Ceremonies would you be pleased to present W. Bro John Holtom to me.
I will ask the Acting Grand Secretary to read out a document.
Bro John, my dear friend, you are a legend in the Province of Oxfordshire not only in the Mark Degree but in all the other Orders of which you are a member. You and I have now been friends for many years and we have been together on many occasions in Craft, Mark Royal Ark Mariner and R & S units about the Province. I recently had the enormous pleasure of installing you as Worshipful Commander of the Menatschim Royal Ark Mariner Lodge.
When the Grand Master invited me to accept this office, before deciding whether or not to accept, I needed to ask you if you would continue to act as Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies. Perhaps I put you on a spot because I said if you were unable to do so I would not accept the appointment. I need not have made that threat because you immediately and unreservedly said you would be honoured to carry on. It is not you who are honoured, but me and the Province that are honoured. You are undoubtedly one of the finest PrGDCs that I have seen in over 35 years as a Freemason. You have already faithfully served 3 of my predecessors and I sincerely hope you will not regret taking on a fourth. I will need a lot of teaching and guidance, and no doubt strict control by you, in performing a masonic job for which I really have no proper experience, my masonic career being along a different avenue.
John, on behalf of the Province I thank you for all you have done in the past and I personally thank you in advance knowing that I will have your great experience and knowledge to guide me through the waters ahead. I am confident that you will prevent me doing anything which is not in the best interests of the Province and that you will guide me at all times to do those things which will enhance the already high reputation of this Mark Province
You are now I believe 76 years old and no doubt looking to do less but all you have done for Mark Master Masonry in this Province since you were advanced in 1977, nearly 40 years ago, completely justifies me in awarding you this Certificate of Merit. In presenting it, I perform my first ever duty as PGM. Nothing that happens hereafter will give me as much pleasure.
